What is the role of school boards in the education system?
The purpose of a school board in Michigan is to oversee the education of students in the community. They are responsible for the operations of the school district, including curriculum, budget, and facilities.
Responsibilities:
Curriculum: Approve textbooks and recommended curriculum
Staffing: Adopt policies for salaries, benefits, leave, and professional development
Budget: Review the superintendent's budget and align funding with district goals
Facilities: Determine school facility needs and communicate construction plans to the community
Policy: Establish policy, set district goals, and represent community values
Safety: Ensure the safety and welfare of students
Property: Acquire and dispose of school property
Employees: Determine matters relating to school employees and contractors
Funds: Control the expenditure and receipt of school funds
School board role:
School boards are the link between the schools and the communities they serve. They monitor district activities to ensure progress is being made and achievement gaps are closing.
